Types of Incontinence
- Stress Incontinence: Leakage of urine in small amounts caused by increasing intra-abdominal pressure, such as while coughing, sneezing, lifting heavy objects, running, or jumping.
- Urge Incontinence: A loss of a relatively large amount of urine in connection with a sudden, uncontrollable need to toilet.
- Mixed Incontinence: A combination of urge and stress incontinence.
Facts
- It is necessary to allow normal filling of the bladder for normal bladder function. A person should not go to the bathroom “just in case”
- It is normal to urinate 6-8 times in a 24 hour period with normal fluid intake with normal intervals at 2-5 hours
- Normal nighttime voiding should be 0-1 time per night for children and adults younger than 65 yrs old and 1-2 times/night over 65 yrs.
- Squatting or “Hovering” over the toilet may result in incomplete emptying of the bladder, overflow from the adductors and gluteals to the pelvic floor muscles results in increased tone in the pelvic floor muscles and decreased urine flowing out.
- Certain medications may cause temporary urinary incontinence or make existing incontinence worse: Antihistamines, Antipsychotics, Antispasmodics, Anti Parkinson Agents, Calcium Channel Blockers, Diuretics, Sleeping pills or Sedatives, Decongestants, Antidepressants
